A DJ’s Guide To WMC 2013: Scotty Solomon’s Top 20

A DJ’s Guide To WMC 2013: Scotty Solomon’s Top 20

This time of year gets hectic and exciting with the buzz surrounding Winter Music Conference, Miami Music Week and ULTRA Music Festival. Whatever you want to call it, it’s the middle two weeks of March when the entire electronic music industry descends upon the Magic City. Record labels, producers, DJs, promoters, nightclub owners, software engineers, sound and lighting manufacturers; you name it, and they are here. Let’s face it, it’s proven to be the busiest time in Miami. These two weeks are more crowded than the Super Bowl and Art Basel combined. It’s hard for me to believe that I have attended WMC for the past 11 years, with this being my second year as a not-so-local (Boca Raton) resident. First up, be prepared for a shortage of cabs!

It can get a bit overwhelming and expensive if you don’t have some kind of plan, and the list of parties this year is extensive, to say the least. ULTRA Music Festival is great, but I have literally already seen 99 percent of those acts. The next two weeks will be the premium opportunity to catch the most sought after, hard-to-find electronic music act in the world. This list is focused on these unique sights, sounds and vibes. Here are a few parties that caught my veteran WMC eye. Play now and sleep later, it’s time for WMC 2013!

Saturday, March 16
OVUM & Friends @ Treehouse, SoBe
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $30
OVUM Recordings is one of my favorites. The label lead himself, Josh Wink, is the headliner here. The supporting cast is also dope: DJ Sneak (house), MANIK (nu-disco), Cajmere (AKA GREEN VELVET!) and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (tech-house). All this for a very reasonable price at one of the best underground clubs on the beach.    ***Enter Melodysiac’s OVUM & Friends giveaway here!***

ULTRA After-Party @ Will Call, DTWN

10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $10
Local promoters Massive ideas are fresh on the scene proving some of the best in local and touring producers and jamtronica acts. This ULTRA post-party features local hero Tony Smurphio of Afrobeta fame’s uppity syth-and-beatbox side project, Beatmachines, along with support from Miami basshead Skinny Hendrix.

Sunday, March 17
Snatch! @ Delano, SoBe
4 p.m. to midnight | 21+ | $30
The Delano is the epitome of South Beach style and architecture. Riva Starr’s music and productions are the epitome of an Ibiz-style beach party. If you want a super sexy and classy beach bash for your Sunday Funday, this is the spot. Not to mention, the price is right; but expect pricey drinks at the Delano pool.

Sunday Social @ Congress Rooftop, SoBe
11a.m. to 8 p.m. | 21+ | FREE
The Congress Hotel is iconic on the Ocean Drive strip. The South Florida music scene is blowing up right now with talent, and we locals and The Electric Sandwich Shop (you know who you are!) have taken over the Congress for a Sunday afternoon of deep and funky tech-house. Come rage with us! It’s sure to be a great vibe…

Massive Ideas Post-Party @ Will Call, DTWN
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 21+ |$10
At it again, Massive Ideas has another great Ultra Post-Party across the street from Bayfront at Will Call with Archnemesis and up-and-coming trap artist out of the 904, Sir Charles. MIA residents Afro Monk and Skinny Hendrix will bump beats.

Monday, March 18
Apollonia & Mobilee @ Treehouse, SoBe
10 p.m to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $30
Mobilee Records, a well respected – and one of my favorite techno labels – is throwing it’s party at Treehouse this year. The sound system outside is perfect for the dark driving beats of Anja Schneider. Also, this is the exclusive show for Shonky this WMC. Do NOT miss this if you’re looking to throw down on Monday night!

Tuesday, March 19
Trapped in the Jungle @ Jazid, SoBe
8 p.m. to Close | FREE
Are you tired of the same old house and trance? Look no further, bassheads: Mashup Miami & EnvyUs Entertainment are teaming up to bring you a one-of-a-kind Winter Music Conference Showcase! One night, two rooms, multiple genres and more than 20 artists dropping their best sets just for you, including genres like jungle, trap, turntablisim, DnB, breakbeats, dubstep and mashup.

Wednesday, March 20
S!NK! @ Carlton Hotel, SoBe
Noon to 11 p.m. | FREE
My boys at AUDIO PLAYGROUND ENTERTAINMENT have stepped up to provide the first ever Silent Disco (two channels) at a pool party! This quiet rager will have something for everyone! Expect some awesome battles in your headphones like: glitch vs. juke, DnB vs. downtempo, trap vs. electro, moohb vs dubstep, house vs hardcore, trip-hop vs. jungle, foot werk vs. breaks, Your Mama vs My Momma! Look for Beat Thief Inc. (their last set at AURA Music & Arts Festival was sick) throwing down.

Diynamic Neon Nights ft. SOLOMUN & Friends @ Nikki Beach, SoBe
9 p.m to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $40
SOLOMUN is taking over Nikki Beach for a night. If you have never experienced a Nikki Beach party, this will be a good one to pop your cherry. SOLOMUN will bring his tribal and progressive techno style, while Stimming (live) is sure to be one of the best funky, tech-house performances of WMC. Again, the mojitos are pricey, but super fresh and dank.

Massive Wednesdays: Break Science @ 7th Circuit Studios, Little Haiti
 9 p.m. 5 a.m. | 18+ | $15adv / $20dos
Massive Wednesdays moves its WMC Edition to Moksha Family Artist Collective’s 7th Circuit Studios where two stages will host top-level talent. Pretty Lights Music artist Break Science is at the top of the livetronica game. The addition of keys n Krates makes this a knockout dance party. Outside, The Pyramid Sessions hosts local mainstays including Dusthead, Milky, Skinny Hendrix and many more.

Thursday, March 21
Dirtybird Players BBQ @ Villa 221, DTWN
Noon to 10 p.m. | 21+ | $50+ (door only)
This is my personal favorite record label and WMC party. These boys from San Francisco know how to do it: barbecue + beats. The dirtybird BBQ is at Villa 221 for the second time, along with a special performance by De La Soul. Get to this rager if you can. Claude Von Stroke, Justin Martin, Eats Everything, Cats and Dogs, J Phlipp and Leroy Peppers (AKA Christian Martin) are going to bring their “A” game.

Hot Creations | Paradise Miami @ Ice Palace Film Studios, DTWN
10 pm. to 8 a.m. | 21+ | $40
I am so glad to see Hot Creations Record Label’s party this year at a huge and unique venue. Hot Creations brings us the best in indie, nu-disco, and funky and dark tech-house. Mr. Jamie Jones himself headlines the label and party with support from Lee Foss, Dyed Soundroom and Craig Richards. All of these guys make music that has that groovy grimy house style that gives you goose bumps every time.

James Holden Miami Exclusive @ Cafeina Terrace, Wynwood
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $20
James Holden is a techno music prodigy discovered by Sasha himself.  And, Holden only plays a few shows a year, which means we’re lucky enough to receive a WMC performance. This is truly special, and the dark underground vibe will be most excellent. The party also features DJ Tennis and Life & Death who normally play the Electric Pickle. They will bring their 100 BPM dirty nu-disco sound to the mix. This party looks sick, and it’s “One Night Only,” so DO IT!

Friday, March 22
Vagabond x Fixed @ Vagabond, DTWN
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 18+ Ladies / 21+ Gentlemen | $20
I’ve always wanted to get to this party, but have never made it thus far. This year, I am ready for Flight Facilities, Tensnake (Live), Maxxi Soundsystem and Poolside (DJ Set). The style of music here brings out the best of nu-disco, indie-electro and funky tech-house music. I love the Vagabond, where you can expect to mingle with the hipsters and enjoy some reasonably priced cocktails, and great beers.

Hospitality Miami @ Club Therapy, DTWN

10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 18+ | $20
If you need a DnB fix, look no further. Hospitality Records is my choice-DnB label and is hosting the best of its talent pool with High Contrast, Camo & Krooked, Craze and John B. This party will have the full range of DnB from liquid and sexy to glitch and grimy.

Saturday, March 23
Wavefront Presents: “Never Say Never” @ SLS Hotel Pool, SoBe
1pm–10pm | 21+ | SOLD-OUT
This party sold out fast! And, it’s no wonder why. Just look at the line-up: Sasha, Adam Beyer, Guy Gerber, Lee Curtiss, Dusky and Thugfucker. It’s also located at the brand-spanking new SLS Hotel South Beach. Definitely stop by to check out this state-of-the-art spot while on South Beach. If you can’t score entry, take a stroll on the boardwalk to catch a piece of the action.

Out of the Blue @ Villa 221, DTWN
Noon to 11 p.m. | 21+ | $20
The local promotion group SAFE is putting on some great parties this year, and this is its daytime BBQ. I have never seen any of the artists on this lineup at WMC, which makes it especially attractive to me. We can expect some funky, jazzy, experimental and improvisational sounds from Four Tet and John Talabot. The guy from The XX is also performing a DJ set here (Jamie XX). Should be a great sunlight vibe.

Bedrock + Creations Gathering @ Vagabond, DTWN

10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 21+ | $40
This is my “go-to” party and favorite way to end WMC. I have been to this event for the past five years. It’s the 12th Annual Bedrock Records soiree, featuring John Digweed at his finest. Mr. Digweed is a legend and has performed at all 26 years of WMC. Come pay homage and move your feet to the best techno around. Dark, groovy and sexy are the words to describe the vibe of this party. Last year, they shut the doors and it kept going at 5 a.m. They were still rocking at 7 a.m. when I left to realize the sun was up!

Apres @ MEKKA, DTWN

10 p.m. to 5 a.m. | 18+ | $20
This is the second of two Pretty Lights Music showcases. Although Pretty Lights himself will not be there (or will he?), the lineup is stellar: Break Science, Mimosa, Griz and Michel Menert, just to name a few. This will be the best livetronica, glitch and trap WMC has to offer. Expect to mingle with a younger hippie and “tree thugger” crowd here.

Sunday, March 24
Massive Ideas Closing Party: EOTO @ Will Call, DTWN
10 p.m. to Close | $20
We’re thrilled EOTO is hosting a WMC closing party this year! EOTO is made up of the drummer and percussionist of the jamband String Cheese Incident, and they play the best live and improvisational dubstep, breakbeats and electro music around. This is true livetronica, a genre somewhat left out of WMC.  Local livetronica act, Sounduo, will open, along with support from Skinny Hendrix.

Remember to RAGE with AWARENESS.

A new contributor to Melodysiac in lieu of WMC 2013, Scotty Solomon brings his love affair with ‘90s techno and his new skills as a mixed-electro DJ to the table (pun intended).
