III Points Festival: Our Top 5 Picks

III Points Festival: Our Top 5 Picks

The Wynwood neighborhood of Miami is most well known for its art walks, graffiti, street art murals and Art Basel events. This coming weekend, though, Wynwood welcomes the first-ever stand-alone festival to be held in the neighborhood: III Points, Thursday October 3 through Saturday, October 5. The three points stand for: music, art, and technology. These points seem to embody the spirit of Miami, and especially the up-and-coming Wynwood area. The festival itself is located at more than a whopping 20 venues throughout Wynwood, which range everywhere from bars to art galleries, warehouses to butcher shops and full-on movie production sound stages. There are plenty of FREE events throughout the three days, but here are the shows that any true audiophile in Miami should not miss.

Thursday @ Bardot: Miami Horror with Dude Skywalker and Pirate Stereo
With a name like Miami Horror, you may think this indie-electro act frequents South Florida often. They actually hail from Melbourne, Australia, and are a rare get for the USA. This show will feature the four-piece live incarnation of producer/DJ Benjamin Plants’ beats. Miami Horror’s latest release, “Real Slow,” is a sexy and smooth house-infused groove that will be a treat to see live. Dude Skywalker will be warming things up, and is Miami’s own indie-electro producer. His sound pairs well with the vibe Miami Horror brings to the night. The sexy, indie house music sounds are sure to kick III Points off on the right note.

Friday @ Mana Wynwood: Point Bass: DJ Shadow, XXYYXX, Fortune Howl, Spies on Bikes, JBZ, and Nuri
Not too long ago, DJ Shadow was controversially kicked off the decks at South Beach mega-club Mansion. III Points and Wynwood seem a much better fit for this legendary underground DJ and producer. The turntabalism and sampling showcased in DJ Shadow’s sets do not belong at bottle service-driven nightclubs. They belong at venues where the patrons appreciate the creativity and skill used to create the unique, hip-hop infused beats of Josh Davis (AKA Shadow). He should feel right at home in the movie production-quality sound stage that is Mana Production Village. XXYYXX, the up-and-coming 18-year-old EDM producer from Orlando, is also one to keep an eye on Friday evening. He recently opened for STS9 at Red Rocks, and has a uniquely lo-fi experimental sound. The art installations at the event are being provided by TVVINHAUS, which is a Miami-based experimental engineering agency. Expect the interactive and psychedelic visuals to blow your mind!

Saturday @ Bardot: RBMA Couch Session with James Murphy
The Red Bull Music Academy Couch Sessions have been an unfiltered and honest look at some of EDM’s best talents. These open format Q&A sessions with musicians, producers and DJs have become the place for artists to express their views on, well, just about anything they want to talk about. You could get production tips and secrets on the latest album produced, or what the said artist prefers to fuel up with before a gig. It’s a very casual atmosphere, which makes for some great conversations between artists and fans. The sessions have even produced some legendary DJ samples (SEE: MOODYMAN RBMA Couch Session – so good). The always outspoken and intelligent James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem is sure to spark some interesting dialog at this event about the state of EDM and its future.

Saturday @ Cafeina: DFA BBQ with YACHT LIVE
YACHT, the duo and sometimes full live band, has opened up for and toured with indie rock royalty such as: LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, The Postal Service and Chairlift. Their pair’s electro-infused indie-rock sound is catchy and danceable. Repping their current label, YACHT plans to showcase what DFA Records is made of for III Points attendees. It will be a treat to see them in an intimate, outdoor, daytime event. This is sure to be an all-out hipster dance party at its best. Get your skinny jorts on, and boogie down with Jona, Claire and Melodysiac!

Saturday @ Grand Central: BROMANCE with Brodinski and Louisahhh!!!
This party is guaranteed to be the most underground, dirty, dance-a-thon of III Points. Brodinski is a DJ and producer from Paris, who has created the record label and brand, BROMANCE, whose parties are all about the French house music they make and love. And, they are single handedly re-inventing the French house sound. Their style is deep, dark, electro and sexy, with hip-hop influences apparent in all their releases. Louisahhh!!!, the lone female of the crew, will be warming things up for Brodinski who’s turntablism and crowd reading skills are second to none when it comes to DJ sets. This fraternity of French artists is worth keeping an eye on in the future, and more than warrants a stop during III Points.
