The Motor City is not your normal festival vacation destination. Or is it? It all began in 2000 when Detroit hosted the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) over Memorial Day Weekend. It has now morphed and grown into what is called the Movement Electronic Music Festival. The festival grounds are located in Hart Plaza, directly on the riverfront of Downtown Detroit. It has evolved into one of the most highly rated electro music festivals in the world. In recent years, Rolling Stone rated it the No. 1 “Niche Music Festival” (2011), as well as the gathering earning top rank on New York Post’s list of “10 Outstanding Music Fests” (2010). Even comparisons to the glorious, early years of Ultra Music Festival and Winter Music Conference have been drawn. With the ticket price for all three days being less than $100, and the lineup stacked with EDM’s most progressive and influential artists; Movement is an attractive option for any avid audiophile.

On the night of April 26, the queue formed all the way around the block at downtown Fort Lauderdale’s notorious live music venue, Revolution Live. And, everyone was abuzz about Sound Tribe Sector 9 bringing the heat on its current tour. Word was that the band was playing tight, and the lighting production was second to none. All the diehard fans were eager to catch a close-up glimpse of Tribe, as they mostly play large-scale festivals nowadays. With Summer Camp, Wakarusa, and Camp Bisco all coming up in 2013, this winter tour of smaller venues was enticing, to say the least. In addition to the younger, and noticeably heady crowd up front, there seemed to be many first-timers who were amped on popping their jamtronica cherries. As soon as the doors opened, the audiophiles began to flood the submerged pit of Revolution Live. According to most, this is where the best sound in the venue can be found, and it was time to claim space for what was expected to be a packed house.

This spring, Umphrey’s McGee embarked on a “15 Years of Face Melting” tour, which included three consecutive dates in Florida. The finale of the three-night run found it’s way to the newly remodeled Jannus Live in St. Petersburg. Surprisingly, it was band’s first time raging Jannus Live’s outdoor stage in the heart of downtown St. Pete, in proximity to the Salvador Dali and Chihuly Collection museums, an area in which UMphreaks flocked to before the show.
