Sound Tracking: Leerone’s ‘Heart Shaped Bullets’

A good album is one that grabs you from note one and keeps on rolling. Leerone’s Heart Shaped Bullets is one of those albums. Co-written and produced by Chris Seefried of Fitz and the Tantrums, the LP drops today via iTunes.

The first track, “Use my Lips” leads listeners into a sweet, old school world of rock and soul. It’s a standout favorite on Heart Shaped Bullets, and an easy one to get stuck in your head. It starts off sounding very vintage-rock, and takes a turn into a much more modern-day alternative tone. It is a great fusion of sounds to kick off the LP.

The rest of the album moves along in a cohesive way, swaying in and out of both the rock and soul genres, while even tapping into some country roots as well.

Leerone mixes it up between fast and slow, gutsy and sweet. “She’s Your Bird” has a great background guitar strum that is reminiscent of a score from a ‘50s-style movie or TV show. “Trouble” strikes an indie-lead, female-Fiona Apple sort of chord. The singer loses me a bit with the title track “Heart Shaped Bullets,” but hey, not every song is for everyone.

One of the most unique points of the album is that Leerone’s vocals don’t exactly match the soul-rock feel. She isn’t grungy or classic or badass sounding at all. If anything, she sounds like the lead singer of an alt-rock or modern country band. Lucky for Leerone – and for us – it works. She contributes a saccharine element to these beats, offering a distinctive sound.

The album is a fun little listen filled with surprisingly catchy beats and lyrics. Leerone has found a great groove, and I’m excited to see what comes next for the songstress.
